After a well deserved day of rest – or for the organization a busy day in moving all equipment from track to road – all ready to kick off the road tournament with the 100m sprint race. 100m straight, explosive starts and all energy condensed in 10s race!
Unfortunately the weather gods were not in Zandvoorde. Semifinals and finals had to be postponed to the next day.
In the late afternoon, road dried up and the elimination races on the road could take place in dry conditions!
There were series planned for the youth categories, before we could get to the finals. Vik Reynaerts secured a spot in the final, Lenn Kusters & Amelie Ignoul were not able to make it to the final and finished 25th and 21st respectively.
A hectic final in the youth men’s race with an unfortunate crash with a lot of skaters involved, including Vik Reynaerts and Filip Jilek. After the neutralization, Jilek could close the gap with the peloton again and finished 9th. Vik was eliminated and finished 12th.
Giorgio Ghisio Erba is the king of the long distances in this category, he took his 5th gold medal of this European Championships, before Johan Poildessous (France) and Raul Couto (Spain).
In the Junior ladies race, there was a second gold medal for Sofia Schilder. The Dutch skater was at the finish line too strong for the French team with Maiwenn Julou (silver) and Lilou Tilagone (bronze). Great teamwork by team Belgium here, where Lyssa Vansteenkiste (9th) supported her teammate Louka Leemans who finished as 7th. Merel Haemels, the third Belgian skater in the race, finished as 18th.
Metodej Jilek – Czech Republic – was his unbeatable self again, dominated the race with the support of his teammate Jakuk Kovarik and finished off with a good afdvance on Jorge Vega and Adrian Alonso, both representing Spain.
The senior women’s race also suffered from a crash where multiple athletes were involved. After a relatively easy start, team France brought up the pace. We saw a strong race for team Belgium with Fran finishing 11th, Jorun 9th.
Team France realized again a clean sweep with Dupuy, Bernardi & Lefeuvre.
The senior men race was a pray for the Italian Daniel Niero, who is back! Martin Ferrie brought silver back to France, and our own Jason Suttels won the bronze medal. Indra Médard performed strong again for team Belgium, ended on place 7, Jolan Brissinck finished 27th.
